Good Crabs in a Pot
In a community that has been historically disenfranchised, degenerated, and gentrified; sometimes it is difficult to notice when certain chains or limitations have been removed. The theory of "Crabs in a Pot" begins to take shape. There are several versions of the "Crabs in a Pot" theory that implies when crabs are thrown in a pot of boiling water and one tries to escape that another crab will grab him and hold him back.
Many folks are scared to venture out of their comfort zone for fear that opportunities do not exist for ethnic minorities based on economic discriminatory conditions of the past. Not only do they discourage themselves but add doubt to others who attempt to change their economic status. Their attempts to provide constructive criticism are in good faith, but the facts they use to support their advice lack merit. There are a lot of resources available. The hard part is finding them and understanding how to utilize them. A primary initiative of The Black Tie Network is to bring awareness to entitites that are designed to help minority business owners.
Always remember that in business when someone tells you what YOU can't do; remember they are simply stating that THEY don't know how to do it themselves. Donald Trump and Bill Gates failed time after time in business, but they kept trying.
Never be scared to step out on FAITH. A friend of mine once told me that he was on his way to the Broad River to do some fishing. I told him "I just crossed the river and it was way too muddy to catch any fish". He wisely told me "Well, I am going anyway cuz I am damn sure not going to catch any at home." That statement changed my whole outlook on life. How are we ever going to succeed at anything if we are scared to try?
Concerning the "Crab in the Pot" theory. Has anyone ever considered the fact that maybe the crabs had networked together and lifted the strongest crab to the top of the pot. What appears to be 50 crabs holding one crab back, may be 1 brave crab trying to save 50.
Just a thought. Be a brave crab. All pots are not full of hot water.
